Summary

Healthcare providers including hospitals, physicians, home health agencies, nursing homes and other covered entities operating a healthcare program are required to comply with the anti-discrimination requirements in Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. This law is the first to prohibit discrimination based on sex, which includes gender and gender identity. Hospitals will need to write a policy, train their staff, revise their patient rights statement, post new signs, have qualified interpreters and assign someone to handle nondiscrimination complaints.
